chronic pain treatment

If you suffer from chronic pain, then it can destroy your daily living patterns by making it impossible to take care of a family or work at a job. Fortunately, there are several ways to keep chronic pain under control so that you can live a normal life. Use these tips to control your pain each day.

Cold Treatments

When you are having discomfort in a joint such as the wrist or knee, using an ice pack can relieve your pain. Keep ice packs ready in your freezer to use when the discomfort in your body becomes unbearable. Make sure to wrap the ice pack in a soft towel, and also, only leave it on your aching joint for 15 to 20 minutes. You can also soak a foot or hand in a bowl of water that contains ice cubes to relieve your discomfort.

Take Pain Relieving Medications

A physician can prescribe medications that are formulated to relieve pain, but you should only use these for a few days or weeks to avoid developing a dependency on chemicals. You can also find over-the-counter medication such as aspirin or acetaminophen, but if you take these for too long, then you can develop side effects such as internal bleeding of the stomach or liver damage. Use store-bought medications sparingly to avoid side effects or dependency.

Specialized Exercises

You might think that remaining immobile will improve your chronic pain, but in many cases, this is not true. If you aren’t moving, then your tendons and muscles begin to loose strength or flexibility, leading to additional discomfort when you must get out of bed or walk. If you have an injury, then talk to a physical therapist about the best types of exercise that can help to reduce your discomfort.

Heat Treatments

Rather than using ice packs for relief from pain, your body might react better to heat treatments. If you have a stiff back, then standing underneath the hot water in a shower can reduce your pain. When you have arthritis, you can fill a bathtub with warm water to eliminate the discomfort in your body’s joints. You can also use heating pads on a tender joint or muscle, and there are also ointments that you can apply to the skin that create a feeling of warmth.

Visit a Chiropractor

One of the best ways to overcome pain is by visiting a chiropractor for treatments that might include adjusting your spine with a variety of hands-on techniques. With spinal adjustments, the chiropractor can manipulate a vertebra or other part in your back to relieve the pressure on your spinal column’s nerves. A chiropractor can also provide other treatments to help reduce your discomfort, including planning a diet that will help you to lose weight.

When you have chronic pain, you should use a variety of methods to alleviate your discomfort. By using a combination of treatments, you can begin to live a normal life again.
