Eat Healthy Foods

Foods that contain vitamins A, C and E and Zinc reduce the risk of cataracts and slow macular degeneration. According to Harvard Medical School, foods rich in these nutrients also usually contain antioxidants that boost the immune system and prevent cell damage, retinal problems and cancers caused by UV rays and free radicals. Add dark leafy greens, blueberries, carrots, sweet potatoes and other colorful fruits and vegetables to your diet for a wide range of eye health benefits. Additionally, eat certain types of fatty fish, walnuts and other foods that contain Omega-3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation and protect blood vessels.

Protect Your Eyes

Many people don't think about eye safety at school, work or play. Because staring at a computer can lead to eye strain and blurry vision, take regular breaks every 20 minutes by looking at a blank wall or stepping away from your desk and consider getting an anti-glare coating added to your lenses. When outside, protect your eyes from harmful solar rays by wearing glasses that have a UV protection coating. Lastly, wear safety glasses when working with any material that might blow back into your eyes when used or handled, such as paint, chemicals, wood, glass, metal and fire.

Schedule Eye Exams

Certain optometrists recommend that patients schedule eye examinations every two years when healthy and after eye injuries or the diagnosis of a serious health condition that can adversely affect vision like diabetes, a stroke or a brain tumor. Also, schedule an exam if you suddenly experience visual changes, irregular tears, headaches or eye pain. During an exam, the optometrist checks your vision and the condition of ocular and surrounding structures. An exam is also useful for establishing vision quality before any type of medical treatment for comparison purposes after treatment.
