healthy habits

In today’s information age, we are sometimes bombarded with so much information about health care that it becomes almost impossible to keep up with all the recommendations regarding good health care. One year it seems eggs are bad for our health and coffee is good and the next year, eggs are good for our health, coffee is bad and green tea is the best. It’s important to take into consideration a combination of factors that affect our mental, spiritual and emotional health as well. Here are four key basics to maintaining good overall health.

Work hard to maintain good relationships

Any doctor or health care professional will tell you that the quality of our relationships can have a significant impact on our physical health. Having someone to laugh with when we are sad, share our troubles or worries with when we are stressed and our joys and victories with is a crucial part of good spiritual and emotional health – all of which ultimately affect our physical health. Then, when our physical health is in crisis, it is often our relationships that give us the strength to push through.

Take care of your teeth

Good dental health is an oft overlooked aspect of good overall health. Tooth decay and gum disease are often signs of more serious illnesses and if left untreated can themselves develop into more serious illnesses. Because we use our teeth to meet one of our most basic survival needs – eating – living with chronic tooth pain (particularly while eating) can affect more than just your physical health. Simple things like brushing and flossing regularly and making regular dental visits can have a significant impact on your overall health. Dental experts suggest brushing and flossing daily, as well as regular trips to the dentist to avoid plaque buildup and improve overall oral health.

Take time for your soul

We all have something that “feeds” us individually and specifically on a soul or spiritual level. For some, it might be listening to a piece of great opera music or a particularly talented blues guitarist. For others, gardening may help them feel in touch with the soil and with nature. Some people paint or play music, others hike or bike or get out in nature. Whatever it is that feeds your soul, make sure and make time for it. Your overall health depends upon it.

Get plenty of rest

Americans on the whole seem to take great pride in how busy we are and how little time we have for anything. Getting plenty of rest, however, is a key component in overall good health. Clear your schedule, limit your activities, make it a point to turn off the TV at a specific time every night and give yourself a specific deadline for putting away any type of work. If you want 8 hours of sleep, you will generally need to carve out 9 hours of time to get that amount of sleep. Even if you carve out the amount of time you need for sleep, stress and worry can also keep you from utilizing your sleep hours for sleeping. There are many different activities and exercises available that help you clear your mind, minimize stress or put away worry for a time. Some people enjoy a long run or other strenuous exercise a few hours before bedtime, while others enjoy reading, sewing, knitting or other quiet activities.

Good overall health is a culmination of many different factors that may not at first glance seem to be related to health care. Remember, however, that human beings are mental, emotional, spiritual and physical beings, so our psychological, spiritual and emotional health also affects our physical health. Good physical health comes from exercising good practices in all four areas of our overall well-being.
