Society tends to favor the freshness, innocence, and vigor of youth and the ease of beauty it manifests. The media is especially critical of women as they age, projecting an ideal of beauty that has no room for wrinkles. Of course, the physical reality of the aging process can be hard to bear, regardless of gender. No one wants to see their body deteriorate and their strength diminish. No one wants to think of themselves as a worn, tarnished vestige of their former selves. However, aging gracefully is possible with the right tips in both health and lifestyle.
It’s easy to get caught up in the fanfare of physical beauty, but it’s vital we realize it’s not a true marker of human worth. While it may seem like a cliché’, our intrinsic qualities are far more important than any outward visage. One of the best ways to age gracefully is merely to acknowledge and own the traits that make you unique and lovely as an individual, without factoring in appearances. Things like your compassion, generosity, talent for cooking and so on could be just as important to who you are. By focusing on the energy of love, it’s much easier to dispel insecurities of the physical aging process.
Don’t Make Comparisons
It’s human nature to compare ourselves to others and society certainly plays into the game. In the Western world, children are raised to believe that every aspect of life is a competition, and that failure is comparable to death. The truth is, absolutely no one is perfect, and that comparing yourself to others will only result in projecting a negative energy. Only measure yourself by your own gains. If you’re just starting to run, it’s illogical to mark your progress parallel to an Olympian athlete, and the same logic applies to all aspects of your life. Your happiness should not depend on being better than another, but the best you can be, regardless of age.
Maintaining fitness becomes more of a trial as we grow older. As we approach middle age and beyond, binging pizza and watching sitcom marathons on the couch aren’t as easy to recover from. Aging gracefully requires us to be more cognizant of our bodies and minds, so that we may maintain a harmonious balance that nets us durable health and longevity. Try to fortify your body with nutrient dense food while committing to a regular exercise routine that you enjoy. You don’t want the health mistakes of your youth to be a downfall. Practice healthy living and regular movement to stay sharp.
As long as we strive for love and peace within ourselves, aging gracefully will come organically. It’s also vital that we merely be ourselves. Physical beauty may mean more to one person than another, and that’s all right. Aging gracefully isn’t about not getting a cosmetic procedure or refusing to dye your hair, it’s about being content with your spirit and nourishing the body it resides in.
