natural sleep habits

Sleep is one of the most important ways that you can nurture your body. However, it can also be one of the most difficult to achieve if you struggle to find enough time at night to sleep. If you are beset with insomnia that leaves you wide awake at the beginning or in the middle of the night, this is even harder to achieve. Rather than turning to a medication to find temporary relief that may leave you with more uncomfortable side effects that you have to treat, try one of these natural, holistic options instead.

Start While You Are Awake

Although it may sound counterintuitive to start working on your sleep habits while you are awake, the things you do during the day can do a lot to make or break your sleep at night. For example, pay attention to what you eat. Do not consume caffeine late in the day. Keep healthy fats in your diet, and make sure that your final meal of the day is high in lean protein. Also, try to exercise at least lightly every day.

Get On a Sleep Schedule

Your body runs on a rhythm, and it gets used to when you go to bed and wake up in the morning. By going to bed around the same time every night, your body will eventually get used to this rhythm, and you will find it easier than ever to fall asleep at night.

Create an Ideal Environment

If your bedroom is loud, bright, and uncomfortable, you will not be able to sleep deeply, nor will you look forward to going to bed. Create a great environment for sleeping by investing in a quality queen mattress, comfortable bed linens, blackout curtains, and a supportive pillow. If you hear noises throughout the night, you may want to invest in a white noise machine to muffle unwanted noises.

Decrease Sleep Anxiety

By worrying about how little sleep you are getting, you may actually be setting yourself up to fail at night. Tell yourself that you can sleep through the night. If you do wake up, only give yourself 10 to 15 minutes to fall back asleep. If you cannot fall asleep in that time, you should get up and do something around the house until you get tired again. Holistic sleep habits can help you get the sleep that you desperately need without making you struggle through uncomfortable or irritating side effects. Good sleep can affect nearly every other area of your life, from how healthy you are, to how well you age.

If you are one of the tens of millions of adults in the United States who struggle with insomnia multiple times per week, start by instituting one new habit every week or two until you have built up a strong and healthy sleep routine. You may find that the rest of your life also becomes easier when you feel rested and rejuvenated.
