Among the five senses, vision is among the most crucial for day-to-day life. While lacking a sense of taste can be a diminished existence, succumbing to blindness or even just cloudy vision can lead to life-threatening scenarios. Fortunately, there are a variety of things you can do to ensure that your eyes stay healthy for a long time. Presented below are three things you should be taking for healthy eyes.
Carrots have long been regarded as an excellent and natural means of preserving quality eyesight. However, is it their orange color or their crunchy nature that has earned them this distinction? No, the reason why carrots are so good for your eyes is because they are rich in β-Carotene, also known as Vitamin A and an antioxidant named after the vegetable's common name; the orange color commonly attributed to carrots is actually the result of high concentrations of β-Carotene. Vitamin A has been known to thwart degenerative vision conditions like cataracts, muscular degeneration and diabetic neuropathy.
If you see yourself as more of a carnivore than an herbivore, you may want to consider keeping fish as a regular part of your diet. Fish, specifically those that dwell in cold water, like trout, sardines, salmon and mackerel are ideal sources for a diet that mingles protein intake with optic preservation. As for why fish is so good for our eyes, it comes down to their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids; much like with the β-Carotene found in carrots, omega-3s are excellent at staunching the progress of cataracts and macular degeneration while their anti-inflammatory qualities help to prevent dryness around the eyes.
A third option worth considering, especially if your ability to eat healthy is limited, would be natural supplements. "But which supplements should I buy?" you may ask yourself. There are several major nutrients and minerals that should be kept on file when shopping for your eye health:
- Lutein cuts the risk of macular degeneration by nearly half.
- Zeaxanthin covers multiple components of the eyes and helps thwart cataracts.
- Vitamins. You should focus on Vitamins A, C, and E.
- Zinc covers a variety of mechanisms within the human body, including our eyes.
Even though our eyes are important, you can see that there is at least one way to preserve eye health for any sort of diet. Whether you are a vegetarian, pescatarian or just someone looking to supplement shortcomings in your normal diet, there really is no good reason to ignore the health of your eyes.
