Many people have the dream of working at home. Its easy to fantasize about waking up late, going out for a walk or to lunch in the middle of the day, and perhaps even wearing your slippers in the office. However, once you have found a way to make it happen, you still have to deal with time management issues.

When you are working at home, the way you structure your day is completely at your own discretion. While this might be rather nice, much of the time this level of flexibility does come with a fair amount of pitfalls.

Let’s face it; today there are more distractions than there were twenty years ago. The same invention that allows for many people to work at home, namely the Internet, can also serve as a tremendous distraction as well. Five minutes checking a favorite Blog or a social networking site can easily turn out to be a lot more than five minutes! Little time wasters of this sort must be guarded against as they can come in a variety of pesky forms.

One of the best moves that you can make is simply to schedule out your time. Now you might be thinking that one of the perks of working at home is that you don’t have to “punch the clock,” so to speak. However, it is still necessary that you block out your days and hours to make sure that you are quite literally getting the job done. There is nothing wrong with sitting down with pen and paper and making yourself out an hour-by-hour schedule. Different cultures and civilizations around the world have maintained schedules for one simple reason; they work.

If you find that you are having difficulty managing your time correctly, try your old friend (or old nemesis), the alarm clock. By setting an alarm clock to go off at different intervals during the day, you will have an added reminder that you should stay on target and manage your time. The alarm clock trick is really one of many you can employ. With a little creativity, you can certainly think of more devices.

The main point is that since you are working either for yourself or with a reduced level of oversight, it might be necessary to develop some structure of your own to keep your work-flow running smoothly. Even if you are having trouble managing your time, don’t panic. Instead, work out a system to make sure that you stay on target. Remember if you finish your work early you can then do whatever you wish with the rest of your day. This in and of itself should be a great motivator!
