Whether this is your first pregnancy or your fourth, you no doubt wake up every morning anticipating your little one's arrival. Some mornings, anxiety leads the charge, leaving you worried about finances or how you're going to handle the responsibility of a new baby. Other mornings, the sheer wonder of the miracle inside leaves you in happy tears. If you're in that golden period between six and twelve weeks, you might wake up every morning feeling something else altogether: nausea. It is estimated that up to 75% of pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting (NVP) at some point after the sixth week of their pregnancy, and dealing with it can be difficult.

Ranges of Morning Sickness

Pregnancy changes the body in innumerable ways. The physical changes are fueled by hormones that can affect women in different ways. If you're lucky, you wake up in the morning with nothing more than a few waves of nausea. For women who are not so fortunate, "morning sickness" can become a misnomer that takes over their lives. Only between 3%-2% of women will be diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum, an intense and often devastating form of nausea and vomiting that leads to dehydration and malnutrition.

Treatment of Nausea and Vomiting During Pregnancy

There are as many "cures" for pregnancy sickness as there are variations of the condition. A select few will choose a pharmacological solution to nausea and vomiting. These women might try prescriptions like Zofran, Promethazine, Benadryl, Antivert or Vistaril to combat the persistent nausea or vomiting.

However, other women prefer to find a "natural" solution to the problem to avoid medication side effects and possible interactions with the baby. Some women simply deal with the inevitable nausea and vomiting and wear it as a badge of honor, something to celebrate or appreciate as part of a healthy pregnancy, but this may not be feasible with severe morning sickness.

Natural Morning Sickness Remedies

Assuming that you are a woman who believes in traveling the pregnancy path in comfort, you've likely considered many natural options for combating nausea and vomiting. Sipping on ginger ale, wearing Sea Bands on your wrists, drinking pickle juice, you've tried them all. But the natural world has more up its sleeve. Try some of these natural remedies that don't get as much publicity.

Vitamin B-6

The pharmaceutical industry has a hand in presenting pregnant women with B-6 in dosages that benefit pregnant women, although you can still get the vitamin by eating foods such as bananas, fish, chicken, and potatoes. The recommended intake of B6 to combat morning sickness is 10 to 25 mg every eight hours.


You can make a tea from almost any plant or herb. Ginger tea is a well-known treatment for nausea, but if that doesn't work for you, try mint or fennel. Mint has a sprite and perky taste and also works to inhibit the stomach's gag reflex. Fennel is a Chinese folk remedy from way back. Fennel helps to calm the digestive system and sipping or chewing on some fennel can ease morning sickness.

Protein Or Starch

Foods that are high in protein or starch are believed to help ease nausea. The starches in potatoes, bread and pasta are easy to digest and also filling, so you can minimize the nausea that comes with eating less. Peanut butter and nuts are good choices for protein and can help you avoid the problems that other high-protein foods often present. It is advisable to go for low-fat, high-protein snacks that can help settle your stomach better instead of eating protein foods that have too much fat.

Staying Active

Easy exercise like walking can help ease morning sickness and is also good for your general health. Drink plenty of water, don't give up your gym membership unless your doctor recommends it, and keep your mind active and engaged in a subject that you find interesting.

Morning sickness doesn' have to be the one negative to being pregnant. Instead, you can tackle it as you would any other inconvenience and simply let it be. As a side effect of a normal pregnancy, morning sickness is something not to fear, but to appreciate and hopefully, these natural remedies make your pregnancy that much easier.
